Screenplay notes are your friend?

Bullshit. Screenplay notes are the worst, right? ๐Ÿ˜’

Youโ€™ve spent months, possibly YEARS, writing this profoundly personal screenplay. Youโ€™ve put in the time; youโ€™ve put in the work. Youโ€™ve invested in courses, books, and those YouTube Videos. You understand the structure, pace, and proper formatting. You opened your veins and spilled your deepest, darkest secrets onto the page. Your Aunt Millie and Uncle Steve said your screenplay was the most impactful piece of literature since The Bible. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ˜‡

Then along comes this clueless, pompous, suspender-wearing, coffee-sipping dickhead who says,

At least, thatโ€™s what you hear. But what is this pompous dick really saying? ๐Ÿค”

Look, I get it. Itโ€™s hard to take a note, especially if you think: โ€œ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’Š๐’” ๐’‘๐’†๐’“๐’”๐’๐’ ๐’‹๐’–๐’”๐’• ๐’… โ€ Well, I hate to tell you this, but they do understand. You just didnโ€™t explain it adequately. ๐Ÿ˜•

Okay, but what about seemingly ridiculous notes that make your blood boil? Notes that youโ€™re convinced were meant for another screenplay; stupid notes about hair color, location changes that have nothing to do with the plot or dialogue; trite and unconvincing notes. What about those notes, MCH?โ€“ shhh, shhh, calm down. Relax. Deep breaths. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ’ญ

A note is not a criticism of your talent, worth, artistry, or skill. Itโ€™s a โ€˜๐›๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฉ.โ€™ Thatโ€™s it. And if your note-giver is worth their salt, that bump is usually followed by a โ€™ Do you have to take the suggestion? Absolutely not. ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ“

But you do have to address the โ€™ ๐Ÿšง

If I bump up against a beat or a moment or the characterโ€™s motivation, itโ€™s often because that beat, moment, or reason runs contrary to what youโ€™ve established, and, as a result, it doesnโ€™t work. You may have intended that beat, moment, or reason to mean ๐—, but if I read it as ๐˜, thatโ€™s on you. ๐ŸŽญ๐Ÿค”

If you said, โ€œ๐‘ด๐‘ช๐‘ฏ, ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’‹๐’–๐’”๐’• ๐’… โ€ Iโ€™d reply, โ€œ๐’€๐’๐’–โ€™๐’“๐’† ๐’“๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’‰๐’•, ๐’ƒ๐’–๐’• ๐’˜๐’‰๐’๐’”๐’† ๐’‡๐’‚๐’–๐’๐’• ๐’Š๐’” ๐’•๐’‰๐’‚๐’•?โ€ Iโ€™m not thick. Iโ€™d like to think Iโ€™ve been doing this long enough to โ€˜๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜โ€™ what youโ€™re trying ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ, but if you had โ€˜๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜,โ€™ and I โ€˜๐ ๐จ๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ,โ€™ you wouldnโ€™t be ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด the note. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“

Letโ€™s break this down. You have spent all this time, effort, and energy writing this personal story. Youโ€™ve done all of the heavy lifting. Youโ€™ve finished a full-length feature film screenplay. Congratulations. I mean this sincerely! No small feat! You worked hard, and you are 100% investing in the success of this screenplay! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŽ‰

But, to me, this screenplay, your lifeโ€™s work? Itโ€™s just โ€˜๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜๐˜€โ€™ on a white page. I am reading your script with fresh eyes and for the first time. My only emotions are my reactions to the words on these hundred or so pages. Thatโ€™s it. I am as impartial as it gets. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ“–

The majority of the notes I give come from me asking three basic questions:

  • Have you created a solid mythology or something that exists only within the pages of this screenplay? Or, simply put, is it clear what this story is about?

  • Do you adhere to this mythology? Or, simply put, do you follow the rules youโ€™ve established? Or even simpler still, does this all make sense within itself?

  • Is there a more compelling/concise way to explain, describe, or show the reader what you intended? If the answer is โ€˜๐˜†๐—ฒ๐˜€,โ€™ hereโ€™s my suggestion. If the answer is โ€˜๐—ป๐—ผ,โ€™ then I leave it alone.

There is nothing personal here. Iโ€™m not trying to trip you up or give you notes for notesโ€™ sake. Iโ€™m not trying to take over and tell you how I would do it. Itโ€™s not about me; Iโ€™m simply bumping up against a moment, scene, beat, or line of dialogue. ๐Ÿ’ก๐ŸŽž๏ธ๐Ÿ“

Hereโ€™s a tip that has served me well over the years. Instead of saying, '๐’€๐’๐’– ๐’… โ€™ If you can develop a better way of getting the intent across, then great. Youโ€™ve kept the sceneโ€™s integrity, moment, and beat intact while making it more evident on the page. If you cannot, you have one of two choices: Scrap the scene, beat, or moment entirely, or leave it in and see if anyone else bumps. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ญโœ๏ธ

But hereโ€™s the rub, if you get two bumps on the same beat? YอŸoอŸuอŸ อŸhอŸaอŸvอŸeอŸ อŸtอŸoอŸ อŸcอŸhอŸaอŸnอŸgอŸeอŸ อŸiอŸtฬฒ

Your intentions in your writing are essential; this is your most intimate โ€˜๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐œ๐ž.โ€™ So when someone doesnโ€™t understand what youโ€™re trying to say, you often hear, โ€˜๐™”๐™ค๐™ช ๐™จ๐™ช๐™˜๐™  ๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ก๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ.

You donโ€™t, and youโ€™re not. Give yourself a break. Youโ€™ve done so much work here. Donโ€™t take anything personally, and remember why you wanted to get notes in the first place. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ“

When you get a noteโ€“ as strange as it may feelโ€“ try saying โ€˜๐ฒ๐ž๐ฌโ€™ right away and see where that takes you. It may take you right back to where you started, and thatโ€™s okay. You only lost an hour or so of your time, but if it takes you somewhere new and exciting, forget about that lost hour and consider all youโ€™ve gained! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿš€
